A dōshin is a subordinate of a Yoriki. A standard equipment for them is the jitte, a parrying weapon used to catch an opponents sword.

The position of a dōshin is usually held by low-ranked samurais. These law officers cared usually more about finding a scapegoat than about uncovering the truth.

They hired civilian assistants from their own money, therefore these men were only responsible to their dōshin and not a yoriki.
